 SMALL RUBBER PART SAVES HUMAN LIVES 

H&M Laakkonen Oy developed MUPI, a locing detector for the wheel 

nuts of heavy vehicles, which both locks the nuts and indicates if they

slacken. The detector may have already saved several lives, while

users say that it has certainly saved substantial sums of money.

MUPI is manufactured from a frost and oil-resistant rubber composition

and is mounted on two wheel nuts. If the nuts slacken, the detector

changes shape, so that the loosened nuts can be easily seen.

The locking detector also prevents a slackened wheel nut from rotating

off completely.

Hannu Laakkonen says that the idea of developing a wheel-nut locking

detector was born, when he and his brother Martti continually hit the

problem of slackened nuts when they ran a heavy-vehicle repair shop.

They also knew that every now and then serious accidents happen

when a heavy wheel comes off.
The brothers set to work right away and by 1997 they had a product

ready for market launch

"-Originally,we manufactured the models ourselves, but now we subcontract

them, as we are not chemists. You need to know a whole lot to be able to

make a suitable rubber mixture.

-Currently MUPI has been protected as a registered design, while applications

have been filed for European and U.S. patents. For starting exports have also

been made in some European and North American countries – Right now, we

have about 40 retailers in Finland, and interest in the product seems to be

growing all the time," tells Mr. Hannu Laakkonen, the Managing Director.
